Amharic Interpretation

Amharic Interpreters for Court and Medical Work

Spoken language support for hearings, depositions and attorney meetings, for hospital and clinic visits, and for agency interviews. Before anyone is assigned we confirm what the speaker actually uses at home, because a client from Ethiopia or Eritrea may be far more at ease in Tigrinya or Oromo, and testimony taken in the wrong language can look finished while missing what the witness meant.

How do I book an Amharic interpreter for a court or medical appointment?

Send the date, the start time with its time zone, the address or video link, and the setting. Tell us who will be speaking and, if you know it, the language they grew up with. We confirm that it is Amharic rather than Tigrinya or Oromo, name the credential the proposed linguist holds, and say whether the work is on site or by video before you confirm.

Why Kaplan

Matched to the Speaker Before the Setting

Testimony, Hearings and Attorney Meetings

Hearings, depositions, attorney and client conferences, and recorded statements. Testimony is rendered consecutively, so the witness completes each answer before it comes into English. Ethiopian names follow a given name and the father's given name rather than a family surname, so we collect every spelling in the file and agree one form with counsel and the reporter before the first question.

Amharic, Tigrinya and Oromo Are Three Languages

They come from the same region, and Amharic and Tigrinya share the Ge'ez script, which is why a request for an Ethiopian or Eritrean speaker so often gets filled with the wrong one. Tigrinya is widely spoken in Eritrea and in Tigray. Oromo sits on a different branch of the family and is written in Latin letters. We ask, and when the answer is Tigrinya or Oromo we say the pool is smaller and plan around it.

The Credential, Stated Exactly

Amharic is not among the twelve spoken languages California certifies, and the federal certification exam tests Spanish and English only. So no one holds a court certification in Amharic from either system. We name what a proposed interpreter has actually completed and send the credential packet to the court or the firm ahead of the date.

FAQs

Common Questions About Amharic Interpretation

Is there a court-certified Amharic interpreter in California?

No. California designates twelve certified spoken languages: Arabic, Cantonese, Eastern Armenian, Farsi, Filipino (Tagalog), Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. Amharic is not one of them, and the federal examination is offered for Spanish and English testing only. We tell you which credential a proposed linguist holds instead of calling them certified. Our court-certified interpreters page explains how the designations differ.

What if the witness or patient is from Eritrea?

Ask what they speak at home before you book, rather than going by the country. Tigrinya is widely spoken in Eritrea, and a person may be fluent in Amharic, in Tigrinya, or in only one of the two. Tell us what they said and we source for that language, so nobody discovers the mismatch halfway through an examination.

Can you cover a deposition with a witness in Ethiopia?

Yes, by video, with the linguist sitting with counsel or joining from a separate location. Ethiopia runs ten or eleven hours ahead of Pacific time depending on daylight saving, so a morning start for the witness is late evening in California and the schedule has to be built around that. Our post on simultaneous and consecutive mode in depositions covers why testimony runs consecutively.

Do you provide Amharic interpreters for hospital and clinic visits?

Yes. Admissions, specialist consultations, discharge instructions and independent medical examinations are all regular requests. In an IME the interpreter renders the examiner's questions and the patient's answers and adds nothing of their own. See medical interpreters for how clinical work is staffed.

Can you translate Amharic civil records and exhibits?

Yes, as written work separate from interpreting. Ethiopian records may be dated in the Ethiopian calendar, which runs seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one, and a careful translation converts the date instead of copying the year across. Our certified document translation service provides a certificate of accuracy with each document.

Where can an Amharic interpreter attend in person?

Our Amharic network is spread over several states rather than concentrated in one metro, so on-site attendance is arranged per assignment and video or phone covers everywhere else. We confirm which it will be before you book, not after.
